We are very proud to launch our fifth quarterly newsletter where we intend to keep you informed of relevant news about DMS de México and the industry.

Mexico City, Cultural Capital of America

In the midst of its skyscrapers, entrails of concrete and nature, Mexico City, "Cultural Capital of America" treasures sites that are recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a Heritage of the Humanity. Do you know them? If not, take advantage this summer to tour them and discover why they are considered valuable to everyone.

Every corner of our country is a proof that we are in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and Mexico City witnesses this, recently becoming recognized by the National Geographic publication as the number 1 city to visit in 2019 , standing out in a list of 28 cities around the world.

The Ministry of Culture, the Joint Tourism Promotion Fund and the Secretariat of Tourism, all entities of the CDMX government, launched the program "Mexico City: Cultural Capital of America", with which they seek to create a strategic alliance with the initiative to deploy the tourism and economic potential of the Mexican capital.

Looking ahead to 2021, when Mexico City will be recognized by the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities (UCCI) and UNESCO as the Ibero-American Capital of Cultures, the initiative seeks to make the city the third most visited in the world through a wide agenda of activities and strategies.

The Historic Center of Mexico City – the largest and most emblematic in Latin America – is one of the most important tourist centers in the world and the main cultural tourism destination of the country. It concentrates some of the nation's most cherished cultural treasures and true jewels of architecture. This UNESCO World Heritage site of UNESCO's 1987, this UNESCO World Heritage site has nearly 1,500 buildings, including temples, museums, hotels, shops, galleries, theatres and cultural centres, many of them listed as monuments historical or artistic. In 668 blocks and an area of 9.7 square kilometers, it is possible to admire the architecture that sums up the history of the pre-Hispanic, colonial, independent and modern eras of our country.

Just mention some world-renowned sites such as the Main Temple of Mexico Tenochtitlan, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace, the Old Palace of the City Hall, the Palace of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Art, among many others. Its cultural richness is not limited to ancient buildings and museums; it is also appreciated in the streets, in the festivities, in artistic works, in the gastronomy and in the daily life of the city.

For the tourist it is a delight to visit the Historic Center of Mexico City, which has been listed by Forbes Magazine as the Fourth Best Place in the World to Eat (after Paris, Rome and Tokyo), because precisely in the heart of the capital are concentrated the traditional restaurants and fondas that prepare the best dishes of Mexican cuisine and international cuisine, as well as canteens, bars, taquerias, cafes and terraces that are true oasis to enjoy a relaxed and contemplate the buildings and the development of the people who tour this area daily.

We recommend that when scheduling your visit, In addition to walking through the Historic Center, consider knowing some other places in the city that have the same distinction of UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity: the area of canals and chinampas of Xochimilco  (last remnant of the pre-Hispanic city of the sixteenth century, its docks offer walks along its canals in the traditional and colorful trajineras),  Ciudad Universitaria (which is home to the National Autonomous University of Mexico recognized as the highest house of studios and which has murals by the most recognized artists of the country) and the  Casa Estudio Luis Barragán  (extraordinary example of modern architecture).
