NEWSLETTER No.3 - March 2019

We are very proud to launch our third quarterly newsletter where we intend to keep you informed of relevant news about the tourism industry in Mexico.

Puebla, The City of the Angels

This beautiful city was built by Spaniards, exclusively for Spaniards who traveled from the port of Veracruz to Mexico City. Marvel with the splendor of its elegant colonial buildings, its streets and flavors that honor its nickname "Los Ángeles" (The Angels). A city with beautiful talavera-covered facades is an authentic and unique place. Puebla is a charm; it is the perfect blend of history, tradition, culture, natural beauty and modernity, with touches of art and colorful buildings.

Many artists, travelers, intellectuals and curious have found in Puebla the perfect place to inspire, take distance from day to day

and relax. Traditional houses, delicious gastronomy and countless treasures make up a destination that you will never want to leave. The best materials and designs of the time were used in this city and the result was a city, which is so beautiful and perfect in its design (for the time) that it is believed by tradition, that were built by the angels themselves.

Some of the most traditional dishes of Mexican food, as well as handicrafts have their origin in Puebla, for example, the "Talavera", mestizo ceramics that has its beginnings since the 16th century. Visit a Talavera factory and have a close look to the whole process to make the traditional ceramics that cannot be called Talavera if it is elaborated elsewhere.

Tour the historic center of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to see the most iconic monuments and buildings such as the main square with its cathedral, whose construction - according to legend - was originally intended to be in Mexico City

You can visit the neighboring city of Cholula, which is famous for its church on an elevation that is actually the largest pyramidal base in the world. Explore this archeological site as well as visit the church and enjoy the wonderful view it offers.

Visit the international Museum of Baroque, a tribute to this artistic tendency that clung to the complicated and the exaggerated use of ornaments. This trend is the most we can find in Puebla. This museum is especially famous for its innovative design by the Pulitzer prize-winner Toyo Ito.

Enjoy the traditional Pueblan gastronomy, a rich pre-Hispanic culinary tradition, among whose remarkable dishes are: The Mole poblano, the Chalupas, the Cemitas, the Chiles in Nogada, the clay oven barbecue and the poblanos sweets.

That's why Puebla is to be walked, admired and tasted!

The San Juan Diego Route, celebrating his Birthday

In this trip you can learn more about the Guadalupe event through the experiences of the Seer, confidant, Messenger and Ambassador of the Virgin of Guadalupe, San Juan Diego. You will know the place where he was born, where the apparitions occurred and many others miraculous places on San Juan Diego’s birthday.

And you can also visit other miraculous and iconic sites for the Catholic faith and important historical places that you cannot miss in Mexico.

This trip organized by DMS Special Interest Group Division focuses on the catholic public of Latin America which take place from  May 2nd to May 7th 2019.

On the second day of this tour you will visit the Plaza of the 3 Cultures (Tlatelolco) enroute to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron saint of the Americas. We will celebrate a mass in the basilica and make a visit to the surrounding areas to know the chapel of the Indians, the chapel of the Sacred Well and the Cerro del Tepeyac, famous for having been the site where Our Lady the Virgin made her appearance to Juan Diego.

Later that day we will visit Teotihuacan (outside Mexico City), better known as the city where men become gods, as the Mexica or Aztecs used to think. It was such an impression of the Aztecs by these mysterious ruins that they were inspired to build Tenochtitlan, its capital that rests beneath the current historic center of the capital. After the guided tour of this city, which at the time was the most important human settlement in the region, we can enjoy the best views of the place and climb to the largest constructions of this site, declared as World heritage by the UNESCO: The Pyramids of the sun and the moon.

On the third day we will celebrate Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Remedies (Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios), known for the miracles related to the health of the local parishioners and to see their section full of miracles and altarpieces made by the people thanking the Virgin for their multiple favors.

Then we will visit the place where San Juan Diego was born in Cuautitlán. The site consists of the house of the two seers of the Virgin Mary and the Hermitage of the 16th century and its small museum and temple. Inside the museum you can see different archaeological pieces found there.

The next stop will be in the municipality of Tepozotlán, famous for its former convent of San Francisco Javier, now converted to the National Museum of the Viceroyalty, with its spectacular altar made of pure gold leaf.

On the fourth day we will celebrate the birthday of San Juan Diego, starting with a mass in the Basílica of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe).

We will continue to the south of the city to visit the beautiful church of San Juan Bautista in the district of Coyoacan, continuing to Xochimilco, the pre-Hispanic floating gardens, known as the Venice of Mexico, (recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site). Enjoy a pole-projected gondola ride through the flower laden canals amidst the myriad of plants and flowers - the great cult of the goddess of fertility.

Back in Mexico City, on Wednesday and Sunday nights, you can optionally enjoy the performance of the famous and unique Ballet of Mexico that takes place at the Palace of Fine Arts.

The fifth day we will leave for Puebla, city of Los Angeles. We will make a stop for mass in the sanctuary San Miguel del Milagro in Tlaxcala, place where San Miguel Archangel made his appearance to the adolescent Indian Diego de San Lázaro warning the people that in a ravine there would be a source of miraculous water that would heal all Diseases. That source has subsisted to this day. Continuing to Puebla, we will see the famous Capilla del Rosario (chapel of the Rosary), the "House of Gold", located inside the temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, considered in its time as the eighth wonder of the New World. We will then visit the Catedral Basílica de Puebla (Puebla Cathedral), known as the Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada (Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception), the most representative monument of the city of Puebla. When you visit the cathedral you enter a world of colors and artistic forms considered one of the great architectural works of America.

Puebla is considered as a Cultural heritage of humanity and this denomination by UNESCO also applies to its exquisite and varied cuisine which we will enjoy during our time here.

On our way back to Mexico, we will make a stop to visit the interesting native church of Santa Maria Tonantzintla, created for the evangelization of the native groups and in whose interior you can observe brown angels, Mexican fruits and indigenous objects.

Upon our arrival in Mexico City we will have a farewell dinner at the hotel.

WHAT IS A DMC (Destination Management Company)?

A DMC provides local destination knowledge and act as an extension of your company.

A DMC (Destination Management Company) offer the following logistic services in their destination; Meet and Greet, Transfers / Transportation, Hotel Accommodation, Restaurants, Activities, Excursions, Conference Venues, Themed Events and Gala Dinners. Naturally, DMCs assist with overcoming any language barriers.

A DMC must be someone that you can relate to and

trust, whilst they assist you on both a creative and professional level. They are often able to provide preferential rates based on the buying power that they have with their preferred suppliers.

The above is only a basic overview of the services that a DMC can provide.

What Does a Destination Management Company Do?
A destination management company, also commonly referred to as a DMC, is a third-party firm that is commonly hired to provide professional services for the planning and implementation of event programs and services. The value of a destination management company primarily rests in the company's extensive knowledge of the local area as well as its professional relationships and local resources. A DMC can be of great help to a corporate event and meeting planner who has been charged with coordinating an event.

Who Hires a DMC?

Any event planner may choose to work with a DMC if the event is outside of their local area. The reasons are simple:

  • Only a local planner knows which caterers, transportations services, hotels, and other facilities will provide the best service within the available budget.

  • A local planner understands cultural norms and expectations--and knows when prices are being jacked up, or unnecessary extras are being added to a bill.

  • A local planner knows where and how to find the best entertainment, freshest food, most helpful staff, and best travel routes.

What a DMC Does

A Destination Management Company (DMC) maintains in-depth local knowledge of the area or region they represent, specifically with regards to the local coordination and implementation of everything from program and event logistics to event activities. In short, a DMC is essentially a highly specialized consultant for practically every aspect of event programming.

As a local consultant, most of a DMC's services fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • Program Design: These services include venue selection and booking, the organization of event activities, and even event decor.

  • Logistics Management: These services include making an event timeline and schedule, booking transportation, and even coordination of guest arrivals and departures.

  • Supplier Management: These services include vendor selection and supplier price negotiation.

  • Accounting: These services include auditing and payment of vendor invoices, financial negotiations, and providing detailed accounting to a client.

A DMC can assist a corporate event planner in coordinating transportation, hotel accommodations, meals, and local activities. But while a DMC maintains relationships with all hospitality-related services in their area, the firm's primary service is the organization and planning of the main event itself whether it be a gala dinner, corporate meeting or conference, or even a corporate incentive trip.

In addition to providing local expertise, a DMC also acts as one key contact throughout the event planning process. Often, the DMC will also be able to leverage lower prices by using their tremendous purchasing power to negotiate for preferential rates with local vendors and suppliers. In non-English speaking countries, a DMC may also help to overcome language barriers.
